San Martín de los Andes, a small town in Patagonia at the base of the Andes, is a center for tourism during both the ski season and the summer months. Much of the town’s architecture was influenced by early German settlers, who introduced Alpine-style buildings constructed of stone and wood.
These cottages at the Apart Hotel La Bora use brick instead of stone, but they feature Alpine-style timber canopies over the arched front doors, and a decorative timber “framework” applied to the façades. Virtually every brick home we see has painted trim, but these cottages show that brick also pairs well with natural wood.
The use of rustic natural materials continues inside where exposed timber trusses and rafters draw the eye to the vaulted ceiling in the main living space. The walls are plastered and a rough tile resembling cut stone is used for the flooring throughout. A brick fireplace with a heavy timber mantle anchors the living room end of the space.
The cottages provide one bedroom in 73 m2 (786 ft2) of single-level living. The floor plan is L-shaped with the bathroom and bedroom extending from the kitchen end of the main living space.
